Guardianship is a safety-focused mobile application designed to support women who feel vulnerable when waiting alone at train stations. The app leverages the ubiquity of smartphones and connects directly to security services, enabling quick protection during emergencies. Its feature set was built from deep research into women’s safety concerns in public transit environments, aiming to reduce fear and provide reassurance throughout the journey.

Problem: Field research revealed that women repeatedly experience fear at train stations, particularly when alone, in poorly lit areas, or without visible security presence. Survey data confirmed: all participants feel unsafe, fear sexual harassment, and desire extra support beyond physical infrastructure. Current safety measures like CCTV and lighting are insufficient because they cannot prevent incidents or respond instantly during danger.

Solution: Guardianship introduces voice-activated emergency response: when a user shouts “Help!”, a very loud alarm is triggered and the police are automatically alerted. The app also offers report submission, station hazard visibility, and safety hints for informed travel. This proactive deterrent approach makes the app not just a response tool but a crime-prevention solution for women at train stations.

Project Goals: To design a digital safety companion that increases perceived and real security by enabling immediate access to police, empowering women to take action when alone, and deterring offenders before crimes occur. The goal was to deliver confidence, comfort, and faster intervention without relying on costly environmental redesign or physical patrol presence.
